NACEY remix of Wale’s “Chillin’”

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

It’s becoming more and more obvious that these Nouveau Riche kids don’t get much sleep. What with the monthly parties(which you can hit up this weekend at DC9. PLUGPLUGPLUG) and a rap sheet of remixes as long as my arm, who has time for them Z’s? After more time in the lab, Nacey offers a remix of Wale’s “Chillin’.” You’ll definitely want to grab this soulful take on the original. Get it tonight for tomorrow’s ride to work. You’ll thank me later.

Nacey & Starks EP

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

DC boys Nacey and Steve Starks come full force with their debut EP. The EP is showcases three tracks from Nacey and three from Starks, one of which features up-and-coming Manulita.

If you don’t know about these guys, listen up - Starks & Nacey are two-thirds of Nouveau Riche, a monthly party in Washington, DC, started in 2006 by fellow DJ Gavin Holland.  In 2008, the party was awarded “Best Dance Night” in the City Paper’s “Best of DC” issue, and the two have been described by the Washington Post as “some of the District’s more prolific DJs.”   Starks & Nacey are known for their high-energy sets and have shared the stage with the likes of The Count & Sinden, AC Slater, Nadastrom, MSTRKRFT, Blaqstarr, Miami Horror, Scottie B and Eli Escobar to name a few.  Their productions have won contests on Discobelle and Mad Decent, and recently appeared on Fool’s Gold label head Nick Catchdubs’s Australian Tour Mix.   Their debut EP keeps things moving with an introduction to the duo’s distinctive styles, and their attitude of having fun in the club.”

MONO TO TOUR THIS FALL

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Following two extremely well-lauded shows last month in New York City, MONO will be embarking on a full North American tour in September. They released their latest album, Hymn To The Immortal Wind, on Temporary Residence Limited on March 24th. To celebrate both the release of the album and their tenth anniversary, they brought their infamous live show to New York for two nights, backed by the Wordless Music Orchestra. The Seattle Show Girl said of the first night, Trying to describe being at this show is like trying to describe color to a blind person; if you weren’t able to see and hear it for yourself there aren’t words or even media recreations that can appropriately convey the experience.

In 2008, after five years of touring, MONO took a year to focus solely on writing Hymn To The Immortal Wind. The result is their most thoughtful and eclectic album to date. Written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters in an epic love story. The music is naturally majestic, with MONO’s trademark wall of noise crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted. The instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel and tympani into their standard face-melting set-up.

Recorded to analog tape with long-time friend and producer Steve Albini, there is an intimacy captured here that is at once beautiful and a little terrifying. The creaking of old wooden chairs as the orchestra rocks in their seats (both literally and figuratively), puckered lips rolling along flutes, and even the conductor’s opening cue can be heard during the hauntingly quiet opening moments. While Hymn continues to mine the cinematic drama inherent in all of MONO’s music, the dynamic shifts now come more from dark-to-light instead of quiet-to-loud. The maturity to balance these elements so masterfully has become MONO’s strongest virtue – save for perhaps their uncanny ability to sound every bit like a plane crashing into a Beethoven concert.

Scott Campbell laser engravings

Friday, April 24th, 2009

It’s kind of like that trick you did where you cut out a secret stash into your bible except with currency, lasers and a way cooler design. Tattoo artist Scott Campbell recently showed his work in Miami, FL. The etchings, done on a stack of single dollar bills, show off his skills as a tattoo artist in a killer new way.  Flesh is so passé. Check out more of his sick work - http://www.scottcampbelltattoo.com/

Out of hiding.

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

In February 1999, three longtime friends from West Texas went to a pizza place in Austin, Texas, for a prearranged meeting with a young man from Illinois. The Illinoisan had just moved to Austin, and he had put up a flyer that caught the interest of the others. They ate pizza and discussed movies and arcana. They also decided to meet the next day with their various instruments (two guitars, bass, and drums). This happened, and over the coming months they picked a band name, then picked a better band name, then wrote and recorded an album. That album, called How Strange, Innocence, was largely out of tune, but the band members didn’t really notice at the time. They optimistically printed 300 copies, and gave most of them away. It turned out they really liked playing together, so they kept doing so.

EITS drummer Chris Hrasky says of one of their first live performances: ?In the summer of 1999, Michael (James, bass player) and I were working for the Gallup poll, manning the phones. They announced an employee talent show. We signed up. We shared the stage with a Michael Jackson impersonator, an interpretive dancer and, I think, a magician. I remember that my drumset sort of fell apart about halfway through our show. After it was over, someone came up to us and said ?that was the best heavy metal I’ve ever heard.’?

A friend of theirs (in the American Analog Set) sent a recording of one of their live shows to a record label in Baltimore (Temporary Residence, Ltd.), and that label offered to put out albums for the band. The band agreed. A year later they put out a second album (2001’s Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever). They began to tour often, all over the world. In 2003 another album came (The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place), and in 2007 they put out their most recent, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. They are shocked to see their 10-year anniversary on the horizon.

To celebrate this anniversary, Explosions In The Sky will be playing three special shows this summer, followed by a show in Belgium on 9/9 and a headline appearance at the End of the Road Festival in England on 9/11.

Kid Sister

This Southside of Chicago native, film school graduate, and ex baby clothes peddler has been forcing heads to take notice for a long time.Melisa Young gathered quite a following for herself through the same electronics that power her music.  Collecting fans and staying intouch with them via facebook, myspace and twitter have proveninvaluable.  Even with the absence of a full-length album, she has managed to be more relevant than ever by forcing herself into the spotlight through touring and countless guest spots.  Most notably, a sold out show at 2008’s SXSW music and film festival.

Kid Sister and her label contend the full-length will be out soon, but it has been under that phrase since 2007.  The delays are supposedly self-inflicted, so, hopefully it will be well worth the wait. Her most recent single “Get Fresh” takes a very subversive turn compared to her electro laden previous tracks “Control” and “Pro Nails”. The barebones production purposely showcases Kid Sister’s devious rhyme scheme and definitely highlights a conscious effort to break from  her synth poppy dance roots…if only sparingly so.

During this cold recession of a winter we can’t have Jezzy on blast all the time.

Look for “Dream Date” soon…any day now… maybe even months from now. Melisa we don’t want to wait another year! Either way, catch the live show near you. I’ll certainly be at the Murderland show.  Get at me.
