NACEY remix of Wale’s “Chillin’”

July 21st, 2009

It’s becoming more and more obvious that these Nouveau Riche kids don’t get much sleep. What with the monthly parties(which you can hit up this weekend at DC9. PLUGPLUGPLUG) and a rap sheet of remixes as long as my arm, who has time for them Z’s? After more time in the lab, Nacey offers a remix of Wale’s “Chillin’.” You’ll definitely want to grab this soulful take on the original. Get it tonight for tomorrow’s ride to work. You’ll thank me later.

Youth Group + The Get Up Kids

July 6th, 2009

Youth GroupYouth Group, the Australian four-piece who released their third full-length, The Night Is Ours, this past April, will have barely had time to rest from their three-month North American stint before they’ll head back across the ocean to support emo heroes the Get Up Kids on their 2009 Fall Reunion tour. The fun kicks off in Denver on September 15, after which the two groups (plus Boston trio Pretty & Nice as the first opener) travel through Seattle , Los Angeles, San Diego, Dallas, and Omaha before finishing up together in Iowa City, IA . Youth Group will then continue eastward, headlining shows in Chicago, Columbus, Pittsburgh and Hoboken (with more dates TBA).

Though The Night Is Ours is an album fully comprised of impressively memorable, melodic rock songs, it’s live that the band’s musicianship and tight playing truly becomes more pronounced. Toby Martin’s voice, even clearer and more emotional in person, is complemented by the controlled layers of sound his bandmates put down behind him. There’s a lushness that, even in the sparser, simpler songs, remains, and helps to give Youth Group’s music an even greater resonance.

To celebrate the new tour dates, Youth Group have decided to release “Two Sides,” off The Night Is Ours.

Nacey & Starks EP

June 23rd, 2009

DC boys Nacey and Steve Starks come full force with their debut EP. The EP is showcases three tracks from Nacey and three from Starks, one of which features up-and-coming Manulita.

If you don’t know about these guys, listen up - Starks & Nacey are two-thirds of Nouveau Riche, a monthly party in Washington, DC, started in 2006 by fellow DJ Gavin Holland.  In 2008, the party was awarded “Best Dance Night” in the City Paper’s “Best of DC” issue, and the two have been described by the Washington Post as “some of the District’s more prolific DJs.”   Starks & Nacey are known for their high-energy sets and have shared the stage with the likes of The Count & Sinden, AC Slater, Nadastrom, MSTRKRFT, Blaqstarr, Miami Horror, Scottie B and Eli Escobar to name a few.  Their productions have won contests on Discobelle and Mad Decent, and recently appeared on Fool’s Gold label head Nick Catchdubs’s Australian Tour Mix.   Their debut EP keeps things moving with an introduction to the duo’s distinctive styles, and their attitude of having fun in the club.”

MONO TO TOUR THIS FALL

June 7th, 2009

Following two extremely well-lauded shows last month in New York City, MONO will be embarking on a full North American tour in September. They released their latest album, Hymn To The Immortal Wind, on Temporary Residence Limited on March 24th. To celebrate both the release of the album and their tenth anniversary, they brought their infamous live show to New York for two nights, backed by the Wordless Music Orchestra. The Seattle Show Girl said of the first night, Trying to describe being at this show is like trying to describe color to a blind person; if you weren’t able to see and hear it for yourself there aren’t words or even media recreations that can appropriately convey the experience.

In 2008, after five years of touring, MONO took a year to focus solely on writing Hymn To The Immortal Wind. The result is their most thoughtful and eclectic album to date. Written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters in an epic love story. The music is naturally majestic, with MONO’s trademark wall of noise crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted. The instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel and tympani into their standard face-melting set-up.

Recorded to analog tape with long-time friend and producer Steve Albini, there is an intimacy captured here that is at once beautiful and a little terrifying. The creaking of old wooden chairs as the orchestra rocks in their seats (both literally and figuratively), puckered lips rolling along flutes, and even the conductor’s opening cue can be heard during the hauntingly quiet opening moments. While Hymn continues to mine the cinematic drama inherent in all of MONO’s music, the dynamic shifts now come more from dark-to-light instead of quiet-to-loud. The maturity to balance these elements so masterfully has become MONO’s strongest virtue – save for perhaps their uncanny ability to sound every bit like a plane crashing into a Beethoven concert.

FREE Major Lazer Show, DC.

June 3rd, 2009

Major Lazer are playing a free show in DC at the Rock and Roll hotel on June 20. Major Lazer is a collaboration between Diplo and Switch: disciples of Jamaican born commando, Major Lazer (who has lasers for arms!). They’ve combined forces to fight evil with their brand of hardcore dancehall grind. Listen up, kiddos: although Diplo is one of the main co-conspirators here, this is NOT a Diplo solo show. There will be an MC, 77 Klash (pronounced Two Sevens Clash), and zombie dancers.
